The Credit Valley Conservation Foundation was approved for a federal investment of up to $35,938 with total eligible costs of $97,870 to replace an aging pedestrian bridge at Rattray Marsh Conservation Area. The Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund project employed the innovative Helical Pier Foundation system and prefabricated bridge components to ensure minimal environmental disturbance and impact. The result is a new 45-foot span across Sheridan Creek, connecting Rattray Marsh to the Waterfront Trail.
Rattray Marsh is the last remaining lakefront marsh of its kind between Toronto and Burlington. Replacing the bridge addressed an identified public health and safety risk; supported the local economy through increased tourism and employment; strengthened the fabric of the community by improving accessible recreational opportunities that support healthy and active lifestyles; and enhanced the environmental engagement of residents through exposure to natural environments.
The bridge, which was completed in July 2013, has an estimated replacement period of 50 years.
