FedDev Ontario delivers programming to help create, retain and grow businesses, cultivate partnerships and build strong communities. This will support a strong southern Ontario economy and position the region to compete globally.

Current Programs and Initiatives

Financial Support

Financial support is currently available through the following programs and initiatives. Some are delivered directly by FedDev Ontario, while others are delivered by organizations that have received funding through FedDev Ontario. Please read the details on each page for eligibility and how to apply.

Advanced Manufacturing Fund: Promotes continued growth and increased productivity of Ontario's advanced manufacturing sector by supporting large-scale transformative manufacturing activities, advancing adoption of cutting-edge technologies, establishing clusters or global supply chains and fostering collaboration between the private sector and higher education and research institutions.

Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program: Supports the renovation, expansion or improvement of existing community and cultural infrastructure.

Economic Development Initiative: Supports business and economic development activities that encourage sustainable growth in southern Ontario's Francophone communities with community strategic planning, as well as business and economic development activities.

Investing in Business Growth and Productivity: Assists existing southern Ontario businesses to adopt new technologies that have the potential to improve productivity and expand their operations.

Investing in Business Innovation: Fosters a more competitive southern Ontario economy by encouraging the development of partnerships between entrepreneurs and investors to support early-stage, globally-oriented businesses with the ability to become world-leading innovators.

Investing in Commercialization Partnerships: Addresses innovation and commercialization, and encourages collaboration to improve Ontario's productivity performance so that the region can compete on an international platform.

Investing in Regional Diversification: Designed to build stronger, more diverse economies in southern Ontario communities in the long term by leveraging unique assets and local expertise, and by creating opportunities for economic growth and development in communities across southern Ontario.

Third-party Delivery

Achieving Innovation and Manufacturing Excellence (AIME) Global Initiative: A $9-million initiative, delivered by the Yves Landry Foundation, which provides funding for export-oriented manufacturers in southern Ontario to undertake training activities related to new technology, new processes or procedures.

AC JumpStart: An $8-million program, delivered by the Accelerator Centre, that provides seed funding and skills training to help Waterloo Region companies become more market, customer and investment-ready.

Community Futures Program: Provides operational funding to 37 Community Futures Development Corporations in southern Ontario to deliver a wide variety of programs and services supporting community economic development and small business growth.

Eastern Ontario Development Program: Promotes business development, job creation and strengthened economies in rural eastern Ontario communities. Delivered through the 15 eastern Ontario Community Futures Development Corporations and the Eastern Ontario Community Futures Development Corporation Network Inc.

SMART Advanced Technologies for Global Growth: A $20-million program, delivered by Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, which provides funding for export-oriented manufacturers in southern Ontario looking to invest in advanced technologies. Application intake for this program is now closed.

SmartStart Seed Fund: Delivered by the Ontario Centres of Excellence, the program provides both seed financing and financing for entrepreneurship skills training to help recipients grow their companies and make them investment and customer ready.

Southern Ontario Fund for Investment in Innovation: Provides interest-bearing business loans to support innovation and growth in small- and medium-sized enterprises across the region. Delivered by the Western Ontario Community Futures Development Corporation Association and Community Futures Ontario East.

Past Programs and Initiatives

Funding for the programs and initiatives below has been fully committed and the programs and initiatives are now closed to applicants:

Applied Research and Commercialization Initiative: Aimed at addressing the gap between research and commercialization in southern Ontario and encouraging collaboration between small- and medium-sized enterprises and post-secondary institutions.

Building Canada Fund – Communities Component: Delivered jointly with the Government of Ontario to stimulate economic growth, create local jobs, support a cleaner environment and contribute to overall prosperity across Ontario in communities with populations of less than 100,000.

Canada–Ontario Infrastructure Program: Delivered jointly with the Government of Ontario to invest in urban and rural municipal infrastructure in Ontario, with a focus on "green" municipal infrastructure, such as solid waste management and energy efficient building.

Canada–Ontario Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund: Delivered by the governments of Canada and Ontario, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, and Ontario municipalities to improve and renew small urban and rural public infrastructure across the province.

Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund: Supported large-scale projects of major federal and regional significance in areas that are vital to sustaining economic growth and enhancing the quality of life of Canadians.

Community Adjustment Fund: Aimed at quickly minimizing the impacts of the global economic downturn by creating employment opportunities, and assisting communities with populations of less than 250,000 to adjust and restructure their economies.

Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund: Supported the repair and improvement, including expansion, of existing community infrastructure across Ontario.

Graduate Enterprise Internship: Supported not-for-profit organizations and post-secondary institutions to arrange internships for graduate students and recent graduates of programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics with small- and medium-sized companies in southern Ontario.

Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund Top-Up: One-time investment that helped support community water-related projects.

Ontario Potable Water Program: One-time investment for municipalities that experienced increased costs for their Canada–Ontario Infrastructure Program water projects to comply with changes to Ontario drinking water regulations.

Prosperity Initiative: Supported businesses, not-for-profit organizations and post-secondary institutions in undertaking projects to enhance productivity, diversify the regional economy, and build a competitive advantage for southern Ontario.

Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program in Ontario: Supported the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities across Ontario.

Scientists and Engineers in Business: Helped recent graduates and graduate students in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields by improving access to financing and/or providing business support services to successfully launch and manage start-up businesses in southern Ontario.

Southern Ontario Development Program: Aimed at stimulating local economies and enhancing the growth and competitiveness of local businesses and communities.

Technology Development Program: Supported research and innovation organizations, the private sector, post-secondary institutions and not-for-profit organizations to work together to accelerate the development of large-scale, advanced technologies that will result in new market opportunities for southern Ontario businesses.

Youth STEM: Supported not-for-profit organizations to expand, enhance and coordinate the reach and impact of educational outreach programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics for children and youth in kindergarten through grade 12.
